When you're looking to "pimp" out a car, you made the right choice with the mustang. they have always been notoriously easy to modify.
I would go for an older mustang, though. Today's cars are getting more complicated technologically speaking, and they are not as pimp-friendly.

Everyone has a Ford Mustang....too common let alone a dog. Scion.....too cheapened down...that is the purpose of Scion.
I am guessing you are about 20 (or so). I had a Honda CRX when I was that age as it was the "pocket rocket" of that time unless of course you had a twin turbo Toyota MR2.
$20,000....I'd be looking at the following......
First body style of the Lexus SC400. Clean V8 that will get same mpg as that V6 Stang will and the Lexus is more luxury, sporty, classy, and it will just eat the Stang for breakfast. Lexus vehicles are sleepers...they might not be fast off the line but once they are moving...they got some serious torque.
I would also look into the 2nd generation Lexus GS300, GS400 (98-02). This is more or less the same as the SC, but in sedan form for more room, she will hug the curves better than the SC due to weight distribution and she will sit, shift gears as she rolls smoke if the TRAC is turned off. The GS400 has the same stats as the Chevy Camaro Z28 with the Vette 6 speed package...except the Lexus beats it in the cones.
Both of these cars have many items on the market to trick them out, from rims, to turbos, to interior items, etc. Plus you have the same cars but in the Japanese version over in Japan so you can select from their products as well for even more of a personalized touch that others in the USA wouldn't have.
Even last generation Lexus ES300 is a good choice. It will eat a V6 Jetta....which is saying something.
Other choices could be.....
Honda Accord Coupe 5 speed
Acura RSX

I had the same dilemma and went with the tC. I don't regret it either! I'd suggest just getting the basics. Moon roof-you'll love it! 5 speed/manual and power windows. That should be well under 20g's with enough money to spare on a turbo, exhaust, and interior ice...you will have a faster car than that Mustang, like around 300whp+. I love the Mustang too, my first car was a sweet '65, but resale value was the kicker.
Well, good luck on your decision and here's a website to promote the Scion:

If you want a Mustang, get a GT even if it means getting one a little bit older. The V6 Mustangs suck, my truck will smoke them.

It relies upon on the place you reside. In Europe the Ford concentration has an outstanding wagon that handles nicely, gets sturdy gas financial gadget, and has lots of room. I rented one with my family contributors of three grown young babies and we traveled to Germany, Italy, and Switzerland and we enjoyed it very lots. In NA, that's referred to as the Mazda 5 and it shares lots of a similar effective components.
