The best way to determine age is looking at the dog's teeth. As a puppy they go through different stages of development at different ages, and you can guess age down to the month. As adults they develop tartar build-up and wear down with age, and you can usually guess w/in a year or two. Try this website http://www.ruralareavet.org/PDF/Physical_Exam-How_to_Determine_Age.pdf and you will have a much better understanding of aging a dog!

Most Vets, and Animal Shelters use a combination of things. Mostly its the condition and size of the teeth. If we have to guess we are never 100% correct but we can come close to the age. Generally you tell by the wear and tear, size, and amounts of tarter on the teeth, the size of the bones, the health of the heart, the amount of white around muzzles and eyes if a darker colored dog. Nothing is 100% but its a best guess theory, unless a owner or someone who knows the dog can tell us.

If you take it to your local shelter they will be able to look at the dogs teeth and give you some idea about how old the dog. This is the only way i know of to get a age on a dog, cat or even horse. Good luck!!!

It's hard to describe, really, the ability comes with experience. Anyone who has worked with dogs for a long time can give you a pretty good guess as to a dog's age.

Most vets look at the teeth and determine the age by the wear and tear on the molars and the tartar build up.

It's a rough estimate at best however.

Only your vet can say for sure and then he can give you a range.
Of course older dogs have grey hair just like people. And the playfullness and vigor of a younger dog is very obvious. It depends on your breed too. Good Luck!
