Calitosis. I think that's the name for it.
As to what causes it, I'm not sure. There are several remedies that are surprising.
I do believe there is an over the counter pill you can find in any drug store that will help alleviate the situation.

Just be honest with him, he might have some bacteria in his mouth that is causing the smell. Buy some listerine and have him rainse his mouth in the morning and at night, and see if there is a difference in a couple of days.

Maybe he has a throat problem or if he has sinusitis this could be causing it...get him to go to a doctor, since he knows that ur aware of th eproblem it wont be that embarassing if u tactfully suggest this (that is going to the doctor)

He should go to a good dentist and get a check up. He may have gum disease, which by the way, he could pass along to you through kissing!

He needs to go to the dentist. Regular cleanings. And he should brush his tongue.

Buy a couple tongue scrapers, keep with toothbrushes, and let him see you using it.

Make your dental appts together. Hey I'm going and I scheduled you to. Change to his dentist if necessary.

He needs to see a dentist. He could have something wrong with his mouth if this has started recently. Be honest with him.
