Like others have said, bloodline is the dog's lineage.

In pit bulls, most who dont know much about them talk about having a Razors Edge dog or Gotti dog are going to have BIG dogs that they think are better looking.
Some lines are game lines, meaning they are fighting lines. Others are show lines, others are working lines.
You can do research based on the dogs lines to see what kinds of dogs were produced and what problems, if any that run in the line. If the dog does not have kennel club registration papers, there isnt really a way to determine which bloodline a dog comes from. Someone might say their dog is Colby and have no idea what the Colby line is.
If someone says they have a "rednose pit bull" it's more likely they have a dog with red/liver colored nose. There are old-school Red Nose lines, but dont necessarily have red noses. Some confuse color with bloodline.
Check out http://www.game-dog.com there's a bunch of info about the many many many different lines of pit bulls and how to choose the line you would be best suited to.

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.

An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.

One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:

"Dog Whispering"

This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.

It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.

"Reward Training"

Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.

"Clicker Training"

Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.

"Ultrasonic Whistle"

Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.

Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.

Bloodline is in reference to the family tree. Was there a mix between parents, grand parents, great grand parents. It's "important" if you are a breeder or you show your dogs - purely for looks because if there was a mix your show dog could show signs of the other dog and not what he's suppose to represent. ALSO tracing the bloodline you can see if there were any genetic diseases. Just like w/ us - does high blood pressure, heart failure etc run in the family.

It's important for any dog, but not a necessity only if you want to know the genetic line of the dog. Some breeds are just prone to diseases - genetic or not. Like large dogs are more prone to arthritis and dysplasia just because of their weight.

Smaller dogs tend to be prone to teeth, and jaw problems because of their natural breeding.

There are breed books on pitbulls that go over genetic diseases and other things pits are prone to. Look in petsmart or petco.

Good Luck

The bloodline of a dog is like a family tree.
For me, it is very important. It can show what general traits a dog is likely to have.
As a breeder of American Pit Bull Terriers I can tell you bloodline is one of the most important things to look at when looking for what dog to breed to what *****. Different bloodlines compliment each other.
The traits of bloodlines in APBTs are generally known by most breeders. Red Boy dogs are known to be game, Eli lines are known to be intelligent, etc... Different lines bring different things.

Edited to add.... It is a proven fact that while gamebred APBTs (fighting dogs) are prone to be very animal aggressive they are one of the least people aggressive animals. Game dogs were bred to fight, yes, but if a dog bit one of the handlers or the ref in the pit, it was a loss. Gamedog breeders are the only breeders to cull people mean dogs. Hence the fact that they are one of the most stable breeds in history.

Razors Edge and Gotti pit bulls are mixed. Razors Edge finally admitted theirs were and the ADBA is in the process of revoking their papers. If someone says they have a pit bull and it is over 70lbs. (which is still big) then it is a mixed breed.

Bloodline is their genetics, like their parents, grandparents, doggy ancestors. To have a good bloodline is to have a show-champion animal who surpasses all the judges ask for, such as good health, good coat, good temperament, obedience, etc. and hopefully no medical issues or bad recessive traits. Remember that these genetics are passed down from pup to pup, so if you wind up with the puppy of a champ show dog or the puppy of a puppy of a puppy of a puppy of a champ show dog, you've got a pretty good dog. And considering good show dogs tend to breed together to produce even better puppies with mixed temperaments of both winning parents, the puppies are 'worth' a lot (money wise), but you're getting one hell of a dog.

With pit bulls, I can't think of why theirs would be especially important. Maybe parents or older generations could have been fighting dogs that pass this trained aggression and nasty, pit-fighting temperament down to their puppies? Some people are just idiots and will breed pit bulls to actually be mean and nasty, so I guess that has a lot to do with it.

It more or less refers to the breed. To be pure, the bloodline must be maintained, e.g. to mate species of the same breeds. In horses or dogs, generally bloodline is maintained among the same breeds. Thus a pitbull would be a pitbull with no mix.

Actually, pit bulls are American Pit Bull Terriers. Bloodlines can be important in any dog because they will give clues as to not only the dog's genetic health history, but his possible temperament history as well.

Your dog is more likely to be a problem animal if he comes from a bloodline that has been bred for fighting. This is abominable behavior, but we all know that it happens.

If your dog comes from a bloodline full of champion conformation dogs, then you are more likely to have a sweeter, friendlier dog.

If your dog comes from a line of working dogs, or field dogs, then your dog will probably have a higher prey drive than his conformation cousins, but still be a sweet dog.

All of this is not to say that behavior traits can't be crossed over from one line to another, but the law of averages applies.
