Don't know, but I've been to many wedding and I have not seen this. Personally, I think it's very tacky.

It's a cute and fun wedding tradition. While the newlyweds are inside having cake and champagne, the wedding party (and/or close friends of the bride and groom) is outside decorating the bride's or groom's vehicle (which ever one they will be driving off in) with words and/or phrases like "just married" or putting the bride's name on the passenger window and the groom's name on the driver's window, or even by TPing the car. The cans are just another way of attracting attention to the new couple because they make a lot of racket while the couple is driving down the road.

I believe it originated as a way to keep evil spirits from following the new couple into marriage. Supposedly the spirits were scared off by the loud noise.
