I have replace the radiator cap, and it did fine, for about 15 miles and then when I stopped to get gas, my nephew noticed the anti-freeze coming from my car and then noticed the smell. The gage was not showing to be hot. Went to take it to my Uncles across town to his shop and the gage showed to be xtmly hot pulled it over and put water on the radiator didnt cool down any. We are going to flush the cooling system and the thermostat, but what else could be wrong.

I don't know I had a 93 Intrepid and it was the most reliable best car I ever had but it always had something wrong with the cooling system it would overheat on me occasionally.

There are a number of things that might be wrong, but here is one of the most important things to do.

My wife had a chrysler LHS, and anytime you opened up the radiator cap, it sucks air into the cooling system. Look at the thermostat housing, and you will see a little bleeder screw. First top off the radiator and put the cap on. Top off the overflow while you are at it. Then take the car for a spin around the block to get it heated up.

Once it is nice and hot, use a little wrench to open the bleeder screw - careful, because hot air, steam, and coolant will come out of it. You should get a steady stream of coolant after a few seconds - close the valve, and you should be set. (Use some rags or something to catch the coolant so it doesn't get everywhere). If it continues to have problems then you may have to take some of the other posters advice regarding the fuel pump or other items.

I finally ended up ripping the stupid thermostat out of my wifes LHS on a long trip - it actually had considerably less problems after that - took a little longer to heat up, but who cares?

Good luck!!

Chrysler Corp, has weird electronics. we had a Lebaron, It would say the engine was over heating, and when the cap was slowly bled off, cold anti came out.We never had much heat, and at times the read outs were not correct or relyable. After many head aches, and many different repair shops, we dumped it and want to more reliable foriegen cars.

Years later, the guy we sold the lebaran to, found blown head gaskets, and deterating rubber seals on and in the engine.

I bet it's the water pump - Chrysler has not figured out yet how to make them last.
