Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical closely related to caffeine. When analyzed, the theobromine content of chocolate is reported as caffeine.
This website below says:
For comparison, a 5-ounce cup of coffee has 80 to 115 mg of caffeine. A 12-ounce can of cola runs around 40 to 50 mg and so does a cup of tea. A cup of decaf coffee or cocoa has 4 mg and an ounce of milk chocolate is listed as having about 6 mg of caffeine. An ounce of dark chocolate may vary from 5 mg to 25 mg.
Depending on how much chocolate you eat and if it's strong, dark chocolate, there could be enough to affect you. Personally, I've been kept awake by eating chocolate close to bedtime, but I'm fairly sensitive to caffeine. In another person, the theobromine could disrupt sleep enough to result in nightmares. Plus we don't really know if theobromine affects some people differently than caffeine.
Short answer: Yes chocolate before bed COULD cause nightmares.

It is true that some foods do have an affect on your dreams. It can be different for everyone though. Not sure about chocolate, but I don't see why not.

Don't know about chocolate. Wearing nicotine patches at night certainly does, though.
