You may have overextended the knee somehow. I would go to a Doctor to make sure there is no ligament damage. If the answer is no, then start doing some slow stretches to the hamstring muscles. An easy way is to place a chair or stool in front of you while you relax. Place your foot up on the chair fully extended, or as extended as you can tolerate. Relax the muscles and let them stretch. Also do some normal activities that you enjoy, as long as they are not too stressful. Walking for instance.
In time the pain will probably resolve itself. If not, you may need a cortisone shot in the area. Again, consult your Physician.

Sounds like a baker's syst. Take some glucosomine with condroitin for a few days and see if it improves. Make sure you stay off of it as much as possible and prop it up. If it is a ligament, then alternate between hot and cold compresses and take a good anti-inflamatory. You may need to wear a knee brace for a little while or wrap it with an ace bandage depending on how bad it is.

I have pain in my right knee, I was run over last year by someone who wasn't concerntrating on the road because they were too busy with their tongues down their girlfriends throat!!! When mine starts to ache, I put a neck heat pack round it. The pain is soon lifted. xxx
