With my friends I'm wacky and talkative but I am very self-conscious. When people older than me do or say something I freeze. Once some stranger hugged me and I didn't push him off.

A certain degree of self-consciousness is a good thing.

And you can use it to your advantage.

When you are in a situation where you are intimidated or uncomfortable, being conscious of yourself means you can step out of your intimidation and "be" the - in your words - wacky and talkative person you usually are. It's a little bit of acting - but it's really just being yourself,

Because you are self-conscious, you know what you are like. In circumstances when things are difficult, BE that person.

In time, you'll get used to it and it will become second nature. You're not being phony - you're being your real self.

Good luck.

That's not self-consciousness...You are just timid. Next time a stranger hugs you...Punch him in the eye, then scream your head off.

Avoid associating with people that belittle or make you feel bad. Hugging random people also helps ;)

Well... that's a toughy.... but just be more open, and maybe you can get over that, because you will have to be around ALOT of older people in your life. so you need to hang out with them more, or just i guess deal with it. good luck!
