Clearly they are a part of the relationship with Christ that is a major part of the lives of some people in the Latino community. But why candles? And why, in particular, the picture that is on many of them? Is there a specific meaning of this symbol or this particular kind of candle?

Please, please, no racist answers and no anti-immigration answers. This is a question about religion, not politics.

My husband is Hispanic and Catholic and he will light a candle in memory of his father or other deceased loved ones when we go to memorial masses. I believe that some have pictures of patron saints on them and may be used in an appeal/prayer to that particular saint. Others have pictures of Our Lady of Guadalupe or Jesus (more self-explanatory).
