If so, which type is best? Over-the-door devices or inflatable collars?

Yes, my doctor ordered one for me and showed me how to use it properly without causing strain on my already totally messed up neck. Mine is the over the door model, works fine. Another thing I do is wear a neck collar around the house, it is made of foam and helps support your neck. They cost about $20.00. They are also helpful when driving, even short distances. You'll find that your shoulders are not as tight, and the pain between your shoulder blades will be lessened also.

If used properly traction devices are very safe for home use. Both the OTD and inflatable collars are equally effective. I personally prescribe the OTD variety simply because you can leave it in a door jamb and use it whenever you need to. The inflatable type (Pro-Nex) will have to be set up each time you want to use it. Hope this helps.
