running rough, low idle, black smoke.you should take it to the dealer.have them diagnos it.a code and current data screen info are invaluble.you will just throw money away at triing to fix it other wise.this engine,4 or 6 cyl doesnt have a cap.or rotor.if limited you most likely have a 6 cyl.if it is a six cylinder most likely out of time.water pumps are bad about leaking making a crud type buildup that breaks off and gets between the timing belt and gear.this allows the belt to slip a couple teeth or strip.it may be a mass air flow meter, high possibility.a quick check of codes and data list will show the problem to a good tech.depending on engine calculated load will be at or around 90 percent.if much lower you have a bad airflow meter.load is based on rpm and air flow intake.they can also check base timing though the scantool,if it doesnt go to base timing, most likely out of time. good luck

now no longer particular how a 4 runner has that a lot more effective homestead when you think about that the truck is extremely narrow. do not get me incorrect. i think 4Runners are extreme-high quality yet I can no longer disclaim that they are narrow. i do no longer see a tranny problem. feels like he desires to replace the belts on the 4 Runner or there's a potential guidance impediment. remember this: the 4 runner is in accordance with an easily truck while the RDX is depending on the Honda Civic. the shape will be nicer on the RDX in spite of the undeniable fact that. i might want to pass alongside with the RDX on a street holiday. 4 Runners are fantastic in spite of the undeniable fact that it appears like your dad isn't too keen on upkeep.

Check the timing and the fuel/air ratio. Black smoke typically means incomplete combustion.

IF YOUR CAR IS BLOWING BLACK SMOKE WITH POOR IDLE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE EMISSION SYSTEM. YOU SHOULD HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. GO AHEAD AND GET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOIS AND START FROM THERE.ALSO IT CAN BE A MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR IT IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF YOUR AIR FILTER BOX WITH ONE HARNESS AND TWO PHILIPS SCREWS HOLDING IT IN PLACE. BELOW IS A LINK YOU CAN GET SOME DIRECTION ON HOW TO TROUBLE SHOOT THE PROBLEM YOURSELF, ALSO A LINK TO MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR PIC'S. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF SENSOR EITHER 4 OR 6 CYLINDERS BOTH LINKS BELOW OF PIC'S.

This vehicle has electronic sensors that control the air fuel mixture. I would refer you to a mechanic who has the tools and expertise to test these items.

not an expert here... but seems like you also forgot to change the spark plug cables and the rotor. if this doesnt get rid of the problem then it might be your timing... for that I highly recommend a mechanic.
