if your gonna buy a prius, do it now... there is actually a finance incetive now (0.0% for 24 months) and the cars are being discounted, just 1 year ago people paid over sticker for them

Unfortunately all cars suck. You can take two cars directly off the assembly line, one will run perfectly for years with routine maintenance, and the other will fail every time you look at it wrong.
Look at the warranty - make sure that they actually cover the major drivetrain components (engine, transmission, etc).
When talking to a car dealer, make sure to be willing to walk away or they will take you to the cleaners.
Most new cars will depreciate considerably the second you drive them off the lot, so make sure that you are going to keep whatever you are buying for at least long enough to justify the amount of cash you are laying down.

the money you save on gas will not pay for the extra expense with the batteries and other extras to make it so efficient. if you want a Toyota get the yarus
