Your premise is a bit backwards. Time was given a fixed starting point, Jesus was made up 40 to 60 years later.

"Dionysius named the years relating to his cycle, BC for Before Christ which starts with year 1 and AD for Anno Domini, the year of Our Lord referring to the year of Christ’s birth. This is also a year 1. There is no year 0. That’s the reason purists insists the 21st century actually begins January 1, 2001. (for example the first year began in 1 AD and ended the beginning of 2 AD so the first year of the 21st century begins in 2001 AD and ends with the beginning of 2002 AD)"

BC and AD are outdated terms...the correct anagram is BCE...Before Common Era...AD is simply an accronym for Anno Domini...in the year of our Lord (latin)...which was created by the Catholic Church to create a timeline of events between the Old and New Testaments...

Time did not start after Christ. History goes back thousands of years before Christ was ever heard of.

God did b4 there was even time. He knew the event would start the beginning of time, as it is written . And today it is 2006. Not to mark Mohammad,Buddha,or any other false god. It is God who is the author the Alpha and Omega. The beginning and the end.
Jesus is the one who alone is God.

Not the whole world uses that time system, and most others just use it for ease, to be on time with others. Not sure who originally came up with the system though.

It's probably just when people started keeping track. So it made sense to start from there.
