Dose anyone know about this breed. I lost my Male Rott about 2 years ago at the age of 14. I am ready for a new family member now and wanted information from others about the breed. The lady we would be getting one from has been breeding these dogs in their family for 30 some years. The dog would be fixed as soon as possible, I do not want to breed just want a family dog. Also are male or females of this breed better for a family dog? Any insight would be great! Only answer if you truly know about this breed please. Thank you

Yes Jr I do agree but the fact of the matter is that we do have other animals in the house and with the breed we are looking at in every bit of information I have read it say if you have other animals you must raise the Akita with them. I do agree adoption was thought about but I would not want my other animals to be at risk

Please rescue. Akitas are abandoned and die in shelter all the time. Please don't support another breeder.

The ones I have known have been standoffish & not very trustworthy around people outside their immediate family, or children. They tend to have a lot of problems with skin allergies, resulting in needing a vet dermatologist's care. I would defeniately only buy from a breeder that has OFA or Penn Hip certified parents!

I have owned Rotts. Aside from the fact they are both generally territorial & protective type breeds, their personalities are very different from Akitas. An Akita personality is more like a Chow Chow. I prefer the Rottweilers, personally! But you must decide what works for your lifestyle.

my friends family has always had akitas and i've always been scared to death of the dogs. they are a wonderful family that treat their dogs with lots of love and they think their dogs are sweet and would never hurt anyone, but i always feel differently around them i've been around all kinds of dogs, pitbulls, wolfs, rotts, i now own a bulldog(not that they are even remotely vicious), but the point is that i love dogs, but have always feared the akita. good luck on your choice, buy a book at the pet store or check on ebay, i found a bulldog book from england that has much more info than ours here, maybe there's a translated one from..are they from china? can't remember

If you were able to successfully raise a rottie, you should be fine with an Akita. I believe that they are a bit more independent and less responsive to commands than rotts, but that does not mean that they can't be trained to be wonderful dogs in the right hands.

They shed way, way more than rotties do.

My brother in law had 2 Akitas. The female was not to be trusted though. They are also quite aggressive towards any dog not in the family. I have also heard that they are prone to bloating and that could kill the dog (both my BIL's dogs died of this)

Akita's are for the seasoned pet owner, they can be very strong willed and difficult for some to handle. I also don't feel that they should be around young children. If you know a good breeder ask her questions.
