Which hotel? The Peppertree or the Encina Lodge? Couldn't be the Beachside. None of those are really that close to the mission. Santa Barbara has its share of vagrants... people who came out here and just live off the government. The weather's nice and the city doesn't run them out of town. But overall, it's not bad at all. I've ALWAYS liked Carpinteria, where the Santa Barbara County Sheriff takes a dim view of vagrants. The Holiday Inn Express is very nice, and the Best Western Carpinteria is OK too. Even the Motel 6 (south) is a good deal. However, my favorite place it Prufrocks Garden Inn, a very nice little B&B, a couple blocks from the beach. The town is VERY family friendly, and we let our 8YO loose with a walkie-talkie to go play with her friends. VERY safe.
