Get regular tune ups, change your oil every 3000 miles, make sure your tires are properly inflated, and keep your gasoline clean by using gas cleaners.

You should have bought a 4 or 6 cylinder car. It is probably a 8 cylinder, and they burn the gas. I have a 4 cylinder Toyota Camry which is a mid size luxury car, and it gets 450 miles on a tank of gas. This is in stop and go driving. I get over 650 miles on the highway. I would not have any other kind of car that is not fuel efficient. You know the american auto makers lobby so they do not have to make cars that save on gas. They should be outlawed. Trade it in and get a fuel efficient car.

Something drastic can be done to make better fuel efficiency.

Every model has it's sweet spot of fuel efficiency. I think typically it is around 50-55 mph. So try not to brake often and set your cruise control to somewhere around that.

Next, check your tire for proper pressure.
Take out some unused items in the trunk to reduce the weight. In fact, take off as much dead weight as possible.

Do a tune-up. Change your spark plugs, air filter.
Use quality motor oil.
Add some octane booster with cleaner to clean the engine.

If push come to shove, try to see if you can lower the rpm of the engine to conserve.

----- On the side, it is a better practice to plan your trips before you start your engine. Optimize your route and combine the shopping trips into one to save driving time.

The optimum speed depends on the vehicle (which you have given). Unfortunately, I have not driven your car, so I cannot say. From my understanding, you will get the best economy from driving in the tallest gear (in most cases) with a low engine speed. In your case, you would drive fast enough to allow the car to shift into Overdrive as well as allow the torque converter to lock up. As you speed up, count your gear changes until you hit your tallest gear, then you will notice something that looks like a half-shift (the rpm will drop a few hundred). For example, my truck can shift into OD at approx 33mph, but doesn't allow the torque converter to lockup until I get above 40mph (with minimal load). So my optimum speed would be approx 45mph, where I'm in the top gear at the slowest allowable engine speed. My wife's escape doesn't lockup till 45, so her's is 45-50. I would imagine your car to fall in the 45-55mph range.

About the only thing you do to the car is keep it well maintained. Tires at the proper pressure, wheels aligned, do the regular maintenance.

Your driving habits will have the biggest effect. Use cruise control and chill out.

Remove your foot from the accelerator.

The Lucerne is not an economy car...it was not designed with fuel economy as a priority.
