I've just begun watching Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) on the Food Network..... is she a bit arrogant and pompus or am I just taking her the wrong way? I just feel like she's somewhat insincere.

i really like the show- she is just teaching us cooks who need a bit of guidance how to improve what we already know.

if you want to see annoying, watch "Semi- Homemade"

No, I think you're taking her the wrong way. Now, she IS in the Hamptons, and she does have money (which might be what you are picking up on), but I think she is very down-to-earth and classy.

She has had the luxury to travel to France many times, and she brings alot of that into her cooking. She is very good at making things simple and elegant, while also tasting great! She also does alot of baking/pastry (more so than many other chefs on Food Network), so she is a very well-rounded chef indeed.

She also gives you great tidbits of info like "by the way, never refrigerate tomatoes, it destroys the flavor" or "use good vanilla extract, since it's the only flavor here", etc.

Many heavy people think that wearing black makes them look smaller. It may also be because she wants to keep with the "Contessa" (which is Italian) theme); many people associate the wearing of black with nice mothers from "the old country" who are often good cooks. Or maybe she thinks that black looks good on her and that colors would be distracting. Or maybe she wants to distinguish herself from all the other cooking show chefs who wear traditional white chefs' jackets. Personally, I find the black to be rather depressing and in fact, on most people, it's not a flattering color at all, despite its apparent popularity.

Ina Garten... should become Queen of Food Network..

She's really down to earth.. She may use high quality things, but only so her food turns out high quality. She uses really easy recipes that can be duplicated or alternated to taste and it's usually fits any ones taste buds and is healthy...

Don't hate...

You are correct - I refuse to watch her. She is condescending and I just don't like her. Rachel Ray wears me out just watching her - she needs serious adderall therapy. Paula Dean used to be OK, but lately she acts drunk of the show. Emirell is also so full of himself I can hardly stand to watch him. Bobby Flay the same way - Mario Batali is even worse. W Alton Brown however makes me laugh. Semi Home Made is entertaining for only two reasons....

Well, none of really know her, do we? How she comes across on TV is what we're talking about and she isn't going to appeal to everyone. I'll watch her now and then, but she's not my favorite. Same with Paula Dean.. probably a regional thing.

i am so with you on that.
i mean come on. there is no way that she can have a party every single night. and if it is not a party its either for jeffrey or some of her friends. i think she is 2 good to be true. i watch her all the time and sometimes she just gets on my nerves so i know what you are saying.

I think you're just picking up on the money she has, and where she lives - she's expected to act a certain way, and it's spilled over into her show.

She is as plastic as a human gets. She must have known nothing but wealth her whole live. She is not even close to down to earth like some of us.She lives in her own world.I met her in France and told her I had seen her show, she ignored me and walked away.

I like her. I don't think she is arrogant.

She knows what she is talking about. Really good recipes too.

Except that they are decadent. Unlike Paula Deen's who just makes fattening recipes.
