My first child was 8 1/2 pounds, I had 3rd degree episiotomoy. With my second who was almost a full pound larger, they left me alone and I didn't even tear enough to bother putting a single stitch in it! I much preferred beign left alone. There are definately pros and cons to each but a woman's body is designed to birth babies and generally speaking, there is WAY too much outside involvement from OB's. Unless there are problems ALL babies are born with or without a doctor in teh middle of things.
With the episiotomy, peeing was liek FIRE afterwards for a week or more. With the tear I didn't even notice except that my husband told me I had. Tearing is supposed to heal faster and usually the tear is nto as deep in muscles as the cut would be. Ever get a paper cut? Compare the pain and healign from that to any other cut. It takes much longer and is more of a PITA.
Yes you will have postpartem bleeding, both times for me it was abotu 2 weeks. Breastfeeding if you choose to do that is the best thing for post partem bleeding as it contracts teh uterus every time teh baby eats. If not you can ask a delivery nurse how to massage your tummy afterwards to make it faster.
You sound like you are ready to be a GREAT mom! I'm almost always at my desk if you wanna chat or ask any more questions. I remember with my first how nervous I was!
Good Luck and God Bless!

Really personal choice. I just had my first baby. I tore naturally. It was second degree out of 4. I had to get stiches but just a few. I knew my tear would not be so bad becuase my belly was not that big and my baby was only 6lbs. If you are having a big baby I say get an epistomy. A 4th degree tear is all the way through the rectum. Don't mean to scare you but I did not want a epistomy.
It took me over a month to heal fully heal but after 2 weeks it was hardly noticable. I too was scared to go to the bathroom after I gave birth. Use a squirt bottle to squirt water on you while you urinate. I never felt any burning. Tucks pads are good to use.
Don't stress too much. It will come naturally to you. Everyone is different. Yes you will be bleeding and I just wore a pad.

Well, Don't worry I was 19 when I got pregnant and I'm doing just fine. People will tell you all the good stuff but no one tells you about the after affects. Well here it goes I had an epi and I was manually stretched by the nurse. I had stitches and I had a lot of vaginal swelling it all hurt and was very uncomfortable. If you get a squeeze bottle this will help when you go to the potty.just fill it up with warm water and squeeze it down there after you go to the potty it will ease the pain. The period will be gross but no that bad just stay clean and dry with pads no tampons. The healing process all depends on you body. Don't worry It all seems stressful but in the end you will have a beautiful baby and its all worth it. But labor for some is the best birth control.

Jane,
An episiotomy is usually better because the scar is even not jagged and with tearing it is harder for the dr to sew up. As far as bleeding after you can figure on about a month, don't worry it is just your uterus contracting back to it's original size. You will have some mild contraction like pains as that happens. I never had the experience of burning from the stitches but i do remember sitting forward when I peed so as to try not to get the stitches wet, it probably didn't matter:) I am not a health professional so this is just my personal experience. A good site to go on is Web MD or pregnancy.com. Hope this helps!

well my dear i would say that natural is much better but ive never had a child when they have to cut you open. well when i had my baby i was 18 and well i still am young. but its hard after you have your baby you bleed alot and well if you do get stiches then it does burn to urinate at first. but it gets better. well another thing i would say is to not push yourself and don't take the pain medicine enlsess you really and i mean REALLY need it. It makes the healing prosses longer if you do.
But i do know havening your baby all natural and no things to ease the pain will make you heal faster. i know when i had my baby i bleed up to 2 and a half months that was hell
But they do say if you breast feed that your not so post to bleed that long. and if they just pull your after birth out you will bleed longer. they usually push the crap out of your stomack to get all the peices out well they didn't do that for me.
so i bleed longer.breast feeding is the best thing you can do for your little one it makes there amune system stronger so they can fight colds and such faster. it reduces the ear infections and you will have a more health and happy baby trust me breast feed if you can
baby's who are breast feed have higher iq's and they develop faster so do it if you can
so those are the advantages of breastfeeding
If you bottle feed there are also some advantages but your baby can get sick alot if you don't mix the formula up right and about 72% of people don't mix it correctly and with breast feeding no bottles and no warming or storing just rite there perfect every time
Also i would say i never had the epideral and i think that you might feel it more but you will have a much better feeling after your baby is born
who knows you might not beable to have the epidural i couldnt i went from a 6cm to 9cm in 1 hour
so i didnt have a choice i didnt get it

Well you never know how large the tear can be.. Naturally i would say would be better. Your cervix does a lot on its own. When you pee after getting stiches it does burn a little bit, but thats what the pain medicine is for. They almost 'force' you to pee after having birth.. but they pour water on you as you are peeing.
You do bleed for up to a month after having birth, you are only allowed to use pads! DO NOT USE TAMPONS. Also do not have sex until the doctor gives you the 'ok'.. this could make the bleeding or even the pain worse! Be safe and take your time!

The epistomy was better for me because they used desolving stiches. Both leave you sore. Walking and intercourse help keep you from needing either.Keeping the wound clean helps it heal with less pain. You will start to menstrate after giving birth. 12hr midol worked better for pain than IB prophen. But to help your baby don't let any air blow into its face. No wind, no fan, or AC. This is one of the main causes of Colic. And absalutly no salt should be given to the child until after 1st bifthday. No salt on crackers or in food. The salt will make the gums tough. The baby will be missarable during teething. I have four children. I followed these two simple rules with them and non of them had problems with colic. The only indication that they were teething was a mild tempature. What to Expect When Your Expecting was the best book to have in my home. They are so accurate with everything.

Go for the epistomy!! I had 92 stitches for a tear!! Trust me on this one!! There is some bleeding from childbirth but, it isn't too bad, about like a period. The second child I had an epistomy and I only needed two stitches and that wasn't anything.

I've had it both ways 2 episiodomys and 2 tears. I would go with the tear every time!! I needed less stitches and was up and walking without hardly any pain right after the births where I tore. I just healed so quickly tearing.

It depends, natuarl tearing is ok when the tear will be small, under half a inch, a episiotomy is the best when the OB knows or expects for a larger tear. If a large tear is allowed it can tear into your rectum causing major repair surgery. Check babycenter.com for more info
