No more or less "evil" than any other "faith" based on mythology and superstition, which claims to be the only "true" faith without any evidence of any kind to support its claims.
Other "faiths" that fit that category: christianity, judaism, hinduism, etc.

Have you forgotten that for thousands of years christians have roamed the world killing millions of "savages" who wouldn't convert to their religion or who they thought were inferior? That christians have started hundreds of wars against "infidels" who didn't share their faith? That christians have burned, drowned, flogged, and murdered hundreds of thousands of their own who they believed to be possessed, evil, blasphemous, etc.?

All superstitious religious faith is "evil" when it seeks to impose its dogma on others through any means, especially by force. Period.

No, it truly isn't. The evilness is in the people who distort the faith for their own agenda. The majority of Muslims are wonderful people.

Islam translates to "peace and safety".

Muslim translates as "one who submits to Allah"

How can that be an evil faith?

You are generalizing because of the actions of those Muslims in the Middle East who are raging war against Christians and Jews.

As-Salamu Alaykum - Peace be upon you.

Not at all. It gets a great deal of bad press at the moment, because of the war. During a war, it is necessary for one side to dehumanize the other, so that the notion of killing one's fellow human beings is a bit more palatable.

I have a number of acquaintances who practice Islam, and I find them pretty much like anyone else. Humans, trying to do the best they can.

Certainly not, why should it be, and why Islam more than any other religion ?
Frankly I think you are confusing Muslims and Islamists and, the latter are nothing more than fascists trying to cower the world under their deformed, sick views.
Apart from that, Muslims are as good as any other people.

The most dangerous part of a gun is the nut behind the trigger.

No faith is evil. People who cause harm in the name of that faith are evil.

No, not in and of itself. Like Christianity and other faiths, some twist the writings to their own purposes (such as excuses to kill or discriminate), and then it becomes evil.
