They give you some numbing gel, like anbesol, but stronger. Then they give you a freezing needle. This pinches, but the idea of it is worse than the actual feeling of it. As far as the filling, it will not hurt. Set something up ahead of time with your dentist to let him know if it hurts. My dentist has me raise my left hand. If it hurts, they will give you more freezing so that it won't. Even if it does hurt a little, it is not enough to be afraid of. Don't be nervous. You will be fine. It will be over before you know it. Good luck!

Don't worry. I just got two filled yesterday and they numb your gum before they give you a needle so you will only feel a slight burning sensation. It is normal to be nervous. I was very nervous and very relieved when it was over and I am 38 years old, yes, still a baby when it comes to stuff like that. You will be fine. Take care and good luck. Just brush twice a day and floss once a day and you may not have to worry about cavities anymore:)

No, not at all! The first time I got a cavity filled I was like, "That's it?" It's one of the easiest procedures and doesn't hurt at all. Good Luck. :-)

It might. Some dentists are very good at talking to each patient, and in my experience this expertise may be more useful than any injection. I prefer an injection (as well) anyway.
I tell myself that the dentist is a trained surgeon. I sometimes repeat some manta e.g. 'joy'.
Sometimes things have gone very satisfactorily for me.

If your dentist is good you won't feel the Novocain shot. They put some numbing stuff on with a q-tip first, then carefully apply the Novocain. If you tell them your real nervous and they have nitrous, they might offer that too.

It depends on how sensitive you are in your mouth. It doesnt' bother me one bit, but my mother always needed a whole tank of nitrous oxide to have work done on her because she worked herself up so much being nervous.
If you're deathly afraid of needles, you might have a bit of a hard time, but they can give you nitrous oxide gas to fog your brain and topical numbing solution to numb the spot they poke with the needle. So, it shouldn't be too bad. If my mother could live through it, I bet you will too. Good luck. ;)

I got one filled today and there really is no significant pain. The drill kept giving me the chills though. The numbing part is really the worst, it makes your mouth feel huge!!
