They are excellent the first day, but after just one day they start to dry out. Can I add anything to the recipe to keep them softer and moister longer? Maybe more oil? HELP!

The ones we are going to eat right away I keep them in a sealed container, but not in the fridge. I usually freeze the rest double wrapped in ziplock bags.

Ever heard the term "day-old bread"? Bread used to be made daily, and any unsold bread could be bought at a day-old store. There was nothing unhealthy about day-old bread; it just began to dry out. Nowdays, additives prolong the shelf life of bread products.

When you make homemade bread the food is subject to drying out. After you make and allow the bread to cool, wrap each piece so it's air tight. This will slow the drying, but if you want or need to keep it longer, double wrap it and refrigerate it for up to 5 days. Or, use freezer bags (not storage or sandwich bags) and freeze it for up to a month. Note that not everyone finds this keeps the bread product perfect.

If you have a microwave you can "refresh" biscuits, rolls, and muffins by placing them on a paper towel and microwaving 10 to 15 seconds per roll. My 1100 watt microwave, on HIGH, does one roll in 10 seconds and two in 15, but you will need to test this in your microwave to find the best setting. This works by turning the remaining internal moisture to steam which heats, and softens the item.

It is a proven fact that putting breads into the fridge will cause them to dry out faster. Don't do that. We don't use preservatives, and we usually use less oil. But changing the recipe will change the outcome of your rolls. If you keep them in a 'tupperware' type container, they should still stay moist and soft for at least three days. (Also, perhaps, you kept the rolls 'out' of a container on the first day while you were enjoying them? Put them in a container right away after they have cooled)
Hope this helps. Happy Baking!

There are no preservatives, so they will never last as long as store bought breads and rolls. The only thing you can do to keep them fresh for a little longer is to put them into sealed plastic bags and put them in the fridge.

We use less butter and whole eggs. "They" use lots of butter and less egg white which is a drying component.

Try using a little lard. Crisco is good.
