good question! i have had the same experience.
i wonder if the "mean, intolerant, thoughtless and even cruel answers" are provided by persons who are seeking approval or are looking for a laugh instead of meaningful exchange?
it is reasonable to assume we are all here for different reasons
regardless of personal convictions, i wish we could 'live and let live' and perhaps learn a thing or two along the way
food for thought... snack of choice for a musing mind

Because there are mean, thoughtless, intolerant and even cruel people in the world, and they are not only entitled to share their opinions, but they are positively driven to share them (if you can call shoving an opinion down someone's throat "sharing"). Sad, but true. And there are just some subjects that invite controversy. I'm sure if Yahoo had a category of Abortion, or Homosexuality, you'd find some ugly, mean, cruel, vicious hate-mongering fools in there who are adamant that they are right and everyone who doesn't agree is going to Hell.

To the people of the world (i.e. under the power of Satan) there is no hope, nor promise of salvation. But to the people of God there is hope, peace and love.
I don't mean to simplify your question, but until the Second Coming of our Lord & Savior Christ Jesus all exist under the power of Satan, as injustices run rampant throughout the world.
Some people are more cynical than others which may lead to there responses being seemingly mean, intolerant, thoughless and even cruel but at the core is being without God. The world is divided into two basic sides, of God and not of God, whereby, the plan of the Heavenly Father unfolds before all eyes to see.
Feelings of hatred run deep. But I think the most straightforward answer to your question comes from being Godless. For to be without hope ones personality becomes . . . evil.
I hope this helps.

Yahoo Answers, like the tavern analogy you employed in an early question, is a reflection of the way people react in group settings. Within many group settings you will have the serious type who ask profound questions, and engage in meaningful dialog. You will also have others, who are juvenile and resort to name calling and personal attacks. Put simply the reason why Yahoo Answers has many good questions, with good responses, interspersed with negative commentary, and puerile responses is because that is exactly the way society is.

I think that it really depends on the question. Some questions on here are just so stupid or annoying to give any real thought to. Others insight anger and I think that for the most part we feel brave behind our computers to speak our minds fully, the way that we cant or wont do in public to people that are annoying us. It's actually kinda fun sometimes to speak our minds, especially for people that tend to be quiet and wont stand up for themselves. It gives them a voice. Sometimes though the harsh answers are not deserved,,,,,they are just being mean people because they have other issues in their lives that they can not control. So they bully behind there key pads. That's my thought on it anyway...Have a great day !! by the way,,,sorry if I was ever mean to you...lol, have a good one.

Bored teenagers mostly... maybe a couple true psychotics thrown in for flavor, sometimes someone who thinks they're funny. They exists under any title. Heck I asked something in General Health and got some flaming answers LOL
Just put your filters on and read only the genuine answers, even if they are conflicting.. anyone can have a good point to be explored further.

Read 2 Timothy 3:1-5, which is a prophecy regarding the last days and traits of people during this time. People love money, themselves, not God and neighbor. God's Kingdom will soon bring an end to cruelty.

You know that has alot to do with things being so messed up in this world. Because some people are so unhappy with themselves they don't know how to be tolerant, thoughtful, and forgiving. The best part of a gift is being able to share it with others, like kindness and love.

Because a lot of people are intolerant of other people's opinions. I have opinions, but I respect those of others as well. I think that's the way it should be.
