Plum! What a great color option. I recommend going with lots of different shades of plum. When you get your color swatch for the paint the swatch will have different gradients of the same color. Use those colors as accent pillows, curtains and rugs. Then, to add a unexpected surprise, add either Mauve, Olive green, Gold or Silver. Use this color on two throw pillows in the room and on some of your accessories. I would recommend only one of the colors as you don't want to make too busy of a visual effect it will take away the drama of the gorgeous color that you chose! Good luck.

NO No No, don't use only plum. when I am starting to decorate a room I use a focal point say a picture or rug and I go from there. You don't want to limit yourself so choose a rug or picture with color and lots of it. Fan out the color from that focal point. Plum is beautiful and I have used it but I accent it with Green, gold and beige. [even adding some pinks/yellows] Add some print or stripes to break up your color. Remember that when using a dark color it will close that room in smaller so make sure that your room is large enough to house such a color! Color on walls are wonderful and give you a beautiful palate to express yourself! Good luck!

Everything the same color will be overwhelming. Especially if you use a darker shade of paint. I would recommend you go to a paint supplier and get multiple color sample cards and bring them home with you(usually they are free). Compare and contrast the different colors and shades to go with the furniture you already have, unless of course you're looking for an excuse to buy new furniture. The main thing is look at the colors in the room and lighting where they are going to be. The bright florescent light in the store is deceptive. Also keep in mind that darker paint colors require more coats of paint or tinted primer underneath to get a nice uniform finish.

Plum walls and tan couches........
you could put in some cream curtains you could go darker wine color on some pillows or accents. I would stay away from a bunch of colors in the room that compete. medium wood coffee table and the end tables and coffee table does not have to match. It would be nice to have darker or light end tables.OR even black metal curtain rods with rings. It depends what theme you have going on.Teh rug should have the couch color and a little darker tan in it. It should have the plum ideally but doesn't have to.

Anytime you use only one color, you've lost the excitement of that shade, and the room looks dull. One rule of thumb is: one dominant color, one contrasting color, and one surprise color.
So if you paint the walls plum, then use a contrasting shade for the curtains and rugs. The right shade of lavender would brighten up the room and keep it from seeming so small and dark.
Use your surprise color (a pretty shade of deep gold comes to mind) for things like a pillow, an accent rug, and one art object. Don't overdo it, though. . .you want it to stand out and be interesting.

There are so many different shades of plum you can fun with it. But I would also work some yellow in - maybe toss cushions and or artificial sunflowers in a vase. You will want to have some "light" in the room and yellow does that.
Have Fun!

I think deep gold sounds very very nice with plum. Maybe white too. Avoid blues, light or dark because that will make the room feel cool.

Get a color book and look at blues and greens. Pick any 'cool' color that will keep you in a good mood. Grey is a depressing color so stay away from that. Good luck!
