Depends on the religion. I know when I was a teenager I was a fundie Christian, needless to say it had a very negative effect on me. It made me hate myself as well act hateful towards others. The whole thing about being a worthless sinner who needs saving really did a number on my self-esteem.

For most people, their early to mid teens are spent finding their identity. During this time, we are intellectually and emotionally vulnerable. Teaching religion to someone younger than about 17 is basically just wrong. They'll either rebel against it without thinking or they'll accept it out of obligation or confusion.

Teens are extremely difficult to reach because they are constantly exposed to pop culture and peer pressure. Also, because of the extreme changes in the body during those years it is difficult to get them to focus on spiritual matters long enough to them to make an impact.
