I like to cook items and then be able to freeze them to be able to throw them in the microwave for a quick snack or meal.

Hopefully you aren't freezing a cat. The best way to preserve frozen food or freeze food is to invest in a vaccum sealer. I use it when I get bulk meat on sale, especially chicken or pork. I seperate several pieces and seal and freeze. I also marinade my meat when I do this, it makes it so much more flavorful and tender. If you use regular bags, make sure you get out as much air as possible. I would fold the bag over and squeeze the air out if you can. The less air you have in the bag the less likely freezer burn will occur.

I'll pretend this is in the cooking catagory.

Alton Brown says to use Aluminum Foil to prevent freezer burn, however, it's not wise to put that in the micro-wave, so you'd have to thaw it first and remove it.

An alternative would be to get one of those food saver thingys. It vacuum sucks the air out and the food stays fresh for a much longer time with minimal/no freezer burn.

Air is what causes freezer burn. Use zip lock freezer bags and get as much of the air out as possible. If you don't have one of those seal-a-meal gadgets, you can just use a straw to get out most of the air out. Stick a straw in the opening of the bag then close the bag as far as you can. Suck out the air and close completely.

Here's another tip. When freezing soft foods (like mashed potatoes), flatten it out inside the bag as much as you can before freezing. Takes up less room, freezes faster, and thaws/cooks faster.

I have no idea what the first post is talking about....anyway, store items as airtight as possible. I like to use freezer bags to store most items, even sauces. Different types of food have a different amount of time they can be left in the freezer and still be considered good. Most cookbooks will give you a freezer code, check in there to see how long you can store items.

Preventing freezer burn is all about getting as much air as possible out of the package. The new vacuum sealers you can find in home stores or Wal-Mart are the best thing you can get for this problem.
