Nikon, Olympus and Canon are the best brands.
(In order from greatest to not so greatest)

Nikon is expensive since they are a high quality brand and probably will be hard to find a digital camera by them thats under $300, but I can guarantee you that there cameras will last you a lifetime and provide you with the best quality photos you can get.

Here are a few good idea's for Nikon cameras (I tried to find the cheapest prices).

COOLPIX P4-8.1 megapixels
You can take a look at this camera here:
http://www.nikon.ca/products/coolpixp4/
Average price is $299 for this one.
"This outstanding imaging power easily captures the fine detail of skin texture or the subtle colours of the human eye, and ensures that your shots are clear even when enlarged. The 36-126mm (35mm equivalent) Zoom-Nikkor lens gives you the freedom to zoom in for close compositions, even macro shooting at as close as 4cm, or zoom right out for panoramic scenery"

Or for an even more complex camera,
Nikon D50 - 6.1 megapixels
You can take a look at this camera here:
http://www.nikon.ca/products/d50/
More expenisive, but an awesome camera if you are looking for a camera that will help you in professional photography photo's.
Average price for this one is $619.95.
"Top performance in a compact, smart design make the new Nikon D50 fun and satisfying for accomplished photographers and novices alike. Nikon's popular scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes are now expanded to 7 with the new “Child” mode, helping you get the best shots with the right colour and contrast. Or exercise your creative freedom with full manual control. The new 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and advanced image processing engine give great colour and sharp detail, even in challenging shooting conditions, and Nikon's new 3D Color Matrix Metering II ensures accurate exposure control in all types of lighting. The camera’s response is nearly instant, so you won’t miss a shot – the camera is ready to shoot just 0.2 seconds after powering up, and shutter release time lag is minimal."

If you are looking for cheaper prices and don't mind getting a used version of the camera, you can always try ebay. =)
Hope this helped!

An excellent camera that I bought my daughter and she loves it is
Fugifilm FinePix S5200. Bought it at Beach camera via internet at Edison NJ back in Dec for $ 237 + shipping. It has 5 megapixels, 10x optical zoom, great on batteries and was a best buy in Consumer Reports Nov'06 issue. Great on batteries and takes an excellent 8X10 photo when enlarged. Only 1 second delay between shots.
Another camera you might consider is the Canon SD 600.
Don't forget the all important memory card tha must be bought.

Sony has some GREAT digital cameras, and so does canon, I only suggest those two, because they have been extremely reliable to me and my husband, and they last a long time, of course, considering that you will take care of them. Good Luck!!!

It depends on your level of expertise in photography and what you want in a camera. I did some research lately and decided on Canon. I wanted to go for SD series for smaller size, but then I changed my mind to A540 for its price and performance. I bought mine for $159.99 at a local electronics store on sale.

You might wanna do some research; there are tons of reviews on the internet. www.cnet.com has some decent reviews, as do some other sites.

You can buy a Cannon camera/printer bundle here in Canada for 200.00. It comes complete with a 4.0 mega pixel camera and enough ink and paper to print 20 pictures.

In my opinion, the best point and shoot camera for the money is the Canon a-540. It is very versatle and takes awesome pics. It is compact and solid. Under $190.00. I bought one for my son who is a very high tech person and very particular and he loves it.

well for $60 more you could buy a Canon SD900.. a 10mp camera.. i just bought one off amazon and i love it.. it definatly outperforms my aging Sony T1.. andd i found Canons better at taking pictures at low light than the Sonys.
