This forum isn't large enough to list all the steps. The IRS has a website with hundreds of pages of text. It depends on your income level, and complexity of return required. If you only have W-2 income and will take a standard deduction and not purchasing a house, you could probably use an online tax preparation service like Tax Slayer or Turbo Tax or H and R Block or any of a host of others. If you are purchasing a house or have business expenses, you will have a little more detail to include in your return and the online services will still suffice but you will need a little knowledge about your deductions to stay within the IRS regulations. If you own your own business, depreciable equipment, business transportation expenses, etc. the best thing would be:
1. gather all receipts, invoices, mileage statements, etc papers,
2. find a good tax preparation service or CPA
3. give them all the papers and come back when they call and tell you they are finished.
4. pay the fee and be happy about it.

Use a good tax software, if you are comfortable with operating a computer. If you income is below 52K, you can prepare and e-file free of cost using one of the tax preparation web sites participating in the IRS Free File Alliance.

If your income is in the 35K range, you can contact a VITA center, they will prepare your taxes free. Contact 1-800-829-1040 to find a location near to you.

I am not sure whether somebody will be able to give you step by step instructions without seeing your tax documents

The simple answer is to get some tax software for $20-45. It will walk you through everything you need to do your own taxes. The lower end of the spectrum will handle all of the basics (salary, simple interest, investment gains, schedule C-personal business) while the upper end will handle complex issues (real estate, farm businesses, etc).
I have added a link to the US Dept of Administration. They have a lot of useful tips that can help you with specifics.

Use Turbo Tax

I use Turbo Tax and I find it to be very easy. Just gather your information and it will walk you thru everything...

First, you should check to see if you qualify for free file. You may not have to pay preparation fees.
