Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I have no one to ask.

I got a part-time job in October of last year, but I haven't been earning much, do I still have file taxes? If so, what exactly is the process? =/

Yes, you have to file taxes. Your employer needs to give you a W2 form, and that is what you'll use to figure out your taxes. If you go to e-file.com, you can file for free. If you need help doing your taxes, I'd ask your parents or you could always go to H&R Block.

It's not a dumb question - last I heard, people weren't born knowing this stuff, and unfortunately most schools don't teach it.

Whether you have to file depends on several things. Do your parents still claim you as a dependent? How much total did you make? Were taxes taken out? Did you get a W-2 form for your employer?

If you didn't get a W-2, and got a form 1099 instead, then you'd have to file if you made over $400.

If you got a W-2, then if you're still a dependent of your parents then you have to file if you made over $5150. If you're not a dependent, then you have to file if you made over $8450. If you're not sure if you're a dependent, ask your parents.

Even if you don't have to file, if you had anything withheld for federal income tax (look at box 2 of your W-2) then you should file to get that amount refunded to you.

If you file, download form 1040EZ at irs.gov, and just follow the directions. It's pretty easy - you shouldn't have to pay anybody to do it for you. There are instructions for 1040EZ on irs.gov also.

If you earn only a small amount (I don't remember the amount) you might not have to file. However, it is usually a good idea to file anyway for two reasons:
1. If you had any taxes withheld you might get all or part of it back.
2. Even if your income is low and no taxes were withheld, you should file so that you don't get a letter from the IRS questioning why you didn't file. You'll be on record with all your income, even if you don't have to pay any tax.

Nope, not dumb at all.

Go to IRS.gov and answer the questions there to determine if you should file. Even if your income is low, you may want to file anyway to get the IRS to refund some of your withheld payments. Should be easy enough to use a Free File member to efile a 1040-EZ.

Actually some of the advice here is not true. You don't always have to file. For a single person, here is what the IRS says:

If you expect to file a single return, the IRS requires you to file a return for 2006 if your gross income for the year is at least:

$8,450 if you are under age 65. $9,700 if you are at least age 65.
