My house was built in 1894 & the walls are made of lath & plaster . I put a nail in the wall & if I don't hit the lath or a stud , it comes out .sorry to say my hand hued log studs arn't 16" apart .
The studs just arn't in the right place . Need to use 2 ankers .
How can I hang a big picture safely over a couch ? centered at the right place .?

I know they make ankers for dry wall , to hang things on ,but what about old plaster
A Christmas gift I had to put behind my side board until I could hang it .
Help Please
Thank You

Go to your local hardware store and ask for "Molly bolts" these will work , drill a hole insert Molly bolt and then screw the head the inside expands and will not come out. There's a little black metal washer on the screw head and when it breaks from you screwing the screw unscrew the screw to the desired thickness to hang your picture. This is all metal an not those wimpy plastic crap they sell. good luck

First centre the picture. If there is no stud in place behind it, there will be lath under the plaster, which should hold any reasonable picture. You may need longer nails to reach it,if you are using ordinary picture hooks. You may wish to place a small piece of scotch tape on the plaster before driving in the nail to avoid plaster cracking. If you need to use two hangers, maybe you should use three with the centre one where you want to hang the centre of the picture

Plaster is as hard as concrete, I just put the nails in at an angle with the heads higher than the body. You can use a drill and place the screw type hangers if you would rather.
