Use a variety, one lite, one lager and a pilsner or American style lager, Microbrews are huge and my favorite.
Amstel lite is one of the best in my opinion. Yeungling lager is good The best pilsners are German or Czech - you can try Beck's, St Pauli,or Urquell. Corona and Molson along with the US Biggies- Budweiser, Coors, and Miller are popular. If you are adventurous go with microbreweries in your area. Ask @ the beer distributor what they recommend. Some breweries put out variety packs, which let you try different styles. (these are my favorites and where they are from- Stoudt's PA, dogfish head DE, Anchor Steam,SF CA, Flying Fish NJ , Victory PA, Sierra Nevada India Pale Ale CA.
Also what your serving for food can help you decide for ex. Mexican? Corona and Dos Equis!!!! don't forget limes!!!!
If you are still not sure, ask a some people to bring a six pack-there you got variety and something at least someone will like.
Enjoy the pahty! GO BEARS!

I'd buy a couple different kinds... you can always buy bud light or coors light, it's cheaper and stuff... and it's a light beer. Or buy a lager like Heineken (my personal favorite for mass-produced lagers). Lagers tend to be lighter beers in general (although they do make Heineken Light now which I've never had it probably has even fewer calories). And then also buy a darker beer - Sam Adams Ale is good or Sierra Nevada.
i'd buy 1-2 kinds of lighter and 1 darker beer maybe. Depends on what food you're having and how many people are coming.

Miller Lite or Bud Light are probably most popular ususally. Also good are Miller Genuine Draft - regular or light - both very good. Also another beer I love which most like - Leinie's Honey Weiss! But I agree that usually most people bring something they like! But always good idea for host to have some on hand as well! Just buy whatever is on sale or whatever you like!

All light beer, Zima, wine coolers, and those malt liquor drinks like Mike's Hard Lemonade are sissy drinks. Mike's is ok if you mix it with a shot of vodka. You need to dirnk a British Ale, a German lager, or a micro brew. P.S. Never put fruit in a beer.

This depends on what part of the country you are from. Here's a list for you.
New York, San Francisco or other major city: get the best Fransizkaner, Erdinger, or other available German beer.
Seattle, San Diego, other 'cool' alternative city: Becks, Pyramid, Warsteiner
Any major mid-western city that still wants to be 'cool': Sam Adams, Grolsch, Bud Select
Any other area that really cares about football and could care less about the other stuff: Budweiser!!! you can't go wrong, and trust me they won't care what beer you serve. Just have lots of it and lots of easy snacks like Doritos, cheese, sausage, etc..
Under no circumstances get Pabst blue ribbon!!!

If you are going to have cans, Miller Lite is the best beer you can have. Very popular. However, if you are cool with bottles, I would recommend Heinken and/or Miller Lite for variety.

If you want a short list I would buy Miller Lite and Budweiser. Or you could also add Bud Light. Most people will prefer one of those. If you don't mind spending a little money you could also buy Corona (don't forget the lime).

Buy a bunch of different kinds of beer, more fun and more buzz.
"Don't do beer, do lager, real men drink lager"? Like Budweiser or Miller High Life? Lager is the "standard" beer you moron, do some research.

Personally we will be serving Sierra Nevada Brown Ale & Pale Ale and Guinness. I'm probably biased toward the Sierra Nevada though, since I am from NorCal. Have Fun!
