and the wife and kids couldn't afford to live in the house they were living in? would they kick her out with her kids and put her in a shelter? or would the gov't help until she got up on her feet, again?

Well, say this woman HAS a job. She just doesn't make as much as her husband does/did.

And would she have to handle his finances? like debt, etc...?

This is a major issue for victims of domestic abuse. The fear of losing the house and other forms of support outweigh the abuse.

To answer you question in the clearest way possible: if the breadwinner is in jail and does not have a sufficient income to pay for the house, then, yes, the house can be foreclosed.

I'm assuming that this is the US, but the answer may be similar for other countries.

You (or whoever this is that is being abused) should contact a domestic abuse hotline ASAP. They have resources to help, short-term, as well as people to help with transition and the longer-term.

Will things change? Yes. Are they going to be hard? Yes. But if there is domestic abuse (especially with kids around), it's more important to get yourself and the kids safe.

First of all, you need to move to a smaller house and don't spend money on stuff you don't need. Save money in case of an emergency and don't expect the government to do everything for you. Also, just because the guy is the breadwinner doesn't mean anyone should put up with his abuse. Do yourself a favor and end the relationship. It's not healthy for you and the kids.

This is a genuine concern and a big reason why these men get away with it - especially when children are involved. There are agencies that help women who have been abused to get on their feet again. For the people who are complaining about welfare, get a clue. Children who witness abuse become abusers and the cycle never ends if the women dont get out. The sad thing is most of these guys get a slap on the wrist and nothing is done about them, so prison is a long shot anyway.

there is help out there. Do what you need to do to save your children.

Renting or mortgage has nothing to do with her situation, she would be thrown out. She can move to government supplemented housing if there is any available, and as far as the other bills she is just as responsible for the bills as he is. She can stay in a shelter, but she's not gonna like it, my daughter didn't when her mother started playing the poor victimized wife so she could sue for divorice and take everything. If she's genually victimized my heart goes out to her but if she like sooo many is 'playing the system' I hope she goes through the hell comeing to her. It's just a shame how the children suffer in these cases, and never seem to recover.

I don't mind a small amount of my tax dollars to go help out that woman and her kids get through tough times. After all, they are fellow Americans and part of my community. But there are some selfish people out there that will never be sympathetic to people in need of help.

No one will automatically knock on her door and offer her services. Help is out there, but she has to do the foot work concerning filing the necessary paperwork to apply for welfare and food stamp assistance.

Getting a job never hurts either.

She should have thought of the consequences of her actions, when she picked up the phone to call the police to arrest him.

They should throw her out. If she cannot afford the housepayment, she needs to find a residence she can afford. It is not the mortgage companies responsibiity to provide charity to delinquent homeowners.
