It happened two years ago, and everything seems to be fine now. I want to really get back into fitness. But I'm worried that even 2 years later if I go to the gym and do something wrong working out, I could 're-open' my injury.
Has anyone else gone through this, or know something about how to get back into things safely?

my dad had them and got them operated on...he can do almost everything he used to be able to do, there are some things that give him a tad of trouble with some things, just for an exapmple getting in and out of his kayak...
If it hurts, don't do it....there are plenty oth things you can do at the gym that won't challenge your back and that can still make you feel good...my dad plays tennis every day and no problem, just as another example...try it...go sweat!!!!

I also have herniated disc desease, and my chiropractor was talking about surgery, but I started doing yoga. At first I was very stiff and couldn't even touch my toes, but soon I was doing even the most difficult poses, and quit going to the chriropractor altogether. I can't do any type of impact excercises, no jumping or hopping, but I do or have done yoga, Tai Chi, swimming, hiking, and I'm 51 years old. My back is stronger than ever to an extent. Check with your doctor and see what he/she reccommends.

Sure, go to the gym, check out the guys, have a healthy beverage. Do not strain you back.
I permanently damaged two disks in my neck and had three years of physiotherapy before I found out I was exercising incorrectly.
And just because I am disabled does not mean I can not exercise. It means I have to exercise differently.

my husband had the same problem and it took the same period of time to heal. he was seeing a physiotherapist twice a week for treatment and was having lots of rest. i would suggest seeing a physio or even discussing with the staff at the gym and they may be able to devise a gentle program to get you back into the swing of things. it wouldn't take much at all to have recurrence of your injury - my hubby just sneezes and it happens, you have to learn to be extra careful with your back.

My girlfriend had one and had surgery on her sciatic nerve (I hope that's spelled right) and now she can go to the gym everyday. She couldn't even walk far before the surgery.
