I'm sorry the solider was so bitter, I'm a soilder's wife and care for horses and have my own. Soldiers can be a fairly heartless breed. The thing about barbaro was that he wasn't just a horse he was a special horse. I know all of us that are close to horses have special horses but he wasn't only special he had the courageous sprit of a champion throughbred. If it would have been me personally no matter how special he was, after seeing the xray of the shattered leg i would have taken him to his stall, let his grooms and family say goodbye for as long as they needed and chose whether to be there or not and then did what i felt was right. The way that leg shattered makes me wonder if he didn't have something genetically that caused it to shatter. I don't know that we are doing the racing industry a favor by saving chastroic injuries and then breeding them. We may be breeding weaker horses all the while making faster, harder surfaces to cause more breakdowns. Anyway while their fight to save him was admirable, i think making a champion suffer that long was a little selfish on their part. He was a champion, let him go with the digity of a racehorse there behind the scenes of the preakness, not a broken down pain filled nag 8 months later.

I don't know. It is a tough question to answer without being with him, physically, every step of the way.
I had a horse recover from laminitis in all 4 hooves. She made a full recovery, so it is possible. She had bad days, but she had more good days, so we pursued treatment. However, she didn't have a broken leg....
I really wish they had given him more of a chance. He had just come out of surgery. He was having a bad day. I think they should have doped him up on meds for a couple days, put him in the sling, let the strain of surgery pass, then see how he was doing.
But at the same time, I didn't want him to suffer. The owners knew him best, I am sure they made the right decision.

This ia dificult decision for horse owners to do, a lot of time the owner bale out cause they know the long term outcome, and it appear to be the correct choice for the animals. I had to make this decision about 9 years ago and it haunts me every day for months on end I felt like I was a cold blooded killer it was terrible.
Its a tough decision but life is not always easy and fair, Everyone had tryed everything they could including Barbaro to suceed in his full recovery, but it just wasn't meant to be. So now we who cared in whatever degree have to face the deep loss and sense of pure saddness.

It was very sad, but yes they should have. I've never really followed horse racing, but when I heard that Barbaro's owner was trying so hard to save him, I started reading and keeping up with the story.
After he got the laminitis in his front feet, there wasn't much of a choice. He was in a lot of pain and it was the best thing for him, so that he wouldn't suffer.

He was an animal. I listened on the radio comapring the loss of a horse, yes a horse to the tragedies of September 11th and the assassination of JFK. What is wrong with these people? The same question applies when people are being taken off of life support or stop taking meds to keep them alive. Why should a horse have been kept alive if it was as ill as it was. The fact is the owner was greedy and wanted to keep him alive in the hopes that she could stud him to make money. Greeeeeeeeed. What disgusts me the most is that it was breaking news and was so important. As a soldier in the armed forces I KNOW FOR A FACT that there are more important things going on in the world to report about than a dead race horse. Like for instance specials on the 3084 comrades of mine that have died. I'd much rather here more detail about their lives and what they gave up, than a horse.

While I commend his owners for wanting to save him, he went through 8 months of pain and treatments with the ultimate result that he was euthanized. If he were mine I would have put him down the day he broke his leg. Especially since it wasn't just a simple break but was shattered. But then I don't have tens of thousands of dollars to waste either. I can understand them wanting to save him as a breeding animal but he was insured afterall.

It was a horrible thing to have to do but it had to be done. That poor colt was in so much pain and there was never really any way that he was going to make it. All we can do now is make sure that he is never forgotten.

yes, especailly after they found out the bones were shattered. If it would not have been such a severe break then, I would understand trying to help him through it.
