In all honesty there would be quite a few, but to pick just one I would have to say my mother. My sister and I grew up in the upper class area of Mission Viejo, Ca. We had it all. Everything we asked for my mom made sure we had...well not everything but she always made sure we had what the kids around us had. Little did we know that my parents really struggled to give us what they did. I never realized the sacrafices that she made for us. Even now today she is always there when needed. Though we try so hard to make it on our own, sometimes you just need a little help. My parents raised us there so we would get a good education, live in a safe community...they made sure we were involved in extra curricular activities. That we had a good upbringing in general. Yes, we caused her some grief, and did not always do what they thought that we should. But she never turned her back on us, she always made sure we knew that we were loved, and that we always had a place to go for anything. the one thing about my mom is, that she was not just like that with her own children, but everyone. She has a kind heart. For instance one day outside of a Wal-Mart she saw a homeless man, well not only did she help him...but he had a dog and she bought a huge bag a dog food as well. Every year she donated to Orange Wood childrens home for neglected and abused children. Not just small donations..she made sure there was enough to go around. And even though she raised us in a well off area, she made us see the importance of realizing people are people, you have ups and downs. You don't judge a book by its cover, as you never know what a persons circumstances are. She raised myself and my sister the same way...now its my daughters who choose on their own to spend their holidays and random days in between to work the soup kitchen in Costa Mesa, Ca. My mom had a saying that I have passed down to my kids, and well just about anyone whom would listen, and this is it, " One act of kindness no matter how great or small, can be the one thing it takes to turn someones life around. " I truly believe that my mom was right.

There was a man who taught various subjects in the private school I went to, and I had him for a few subjects from grades 7-12, plus he was the director of our church camp where I worked for 3 summers as a teen, and by the time I was an adult he pastored the church I went to, so he married my husband and me when I was 26. Anyway, he had such a profound influence on my life. I don't yell at my kids and am fun to live with because of his calming influence and wise advice.

I would tell the man that picked me up hitch-hiking the day my wife left me thanks for his advice. He told me when Noah made the ark he only put one window in the top. The window was so he could lookup and not back at the sad world behind him. Amen.

It would be my grandmother because she showed me love and affection when no one else did, because she raised me to be a strong and independent woman and because she was a light in my life.
