Abortion should not be a federal issue. There is nothing in the Constitution that gives the Feds the right to have a say about abortions.

Abortions should be decided by each and every state.

What is wrong with your question (along with much of the abortion debate) is that it is framed in sweeping terms. Try these questions instead:

Should issues of abortion be decided by a single court for the entire country, or should it be decided state by state depending on the decisions of the voters and legislators in that state?

Should any abortion restrictions be enacted depending on how far along the woman's pregnancy has gone?

Should fathers (or parents for minors) have any say over whether an abortion is performed?

Should pregnant women be counseled about their pregnancy/fetus and have a waiting period, or should they not?

Are there ways to decrease the rate of abortions and teen parents that do not encroach on political debates - i.e., that people on all sides can work on?

I am a policy person, not a politics person - I think in nuance and solution, not in debates and absolutist arguments.

When speaking to someone who holds different views, I either listen and respectfully agree to disagree, or I discuss ideas regarding practical policy solutions - things that encourage thinking and conversing, rather than screaming.

Note: you probably can't even discern which side of the fence I am on. I like it that way - and I can stay that way, even as I have reasoned discussions with others.

Just a thought for you in your present environment.

The most credible argument is that desperate women will get an abortion somehow, even if they have to mutilate themselves. Better that they should be able to go to a licensed doctor with the benefit of hospital facilities in case of complications.

The next most credible argument is that it's best to think long and hard about telling another person what they can or can't do with their own body. Anti-abortion legislation seems like a profound invasion of privacy and a clear violation of the First Amendment: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons..."

It's not so much a matter of legalizing abortion as in not banning it in the first place. Anti-abortion legislation costs money to enforce, money that might better be spent elsewhere, like promoting adoption services.

1. That a woman needs to be in control of her own body at all times.
2. An abortion performed is one less unwanted and neglected child.
3. Abortion should be available to women who are raped and should not be expected to go thru pregnancy after that.
4. When something goes wrong and a womans life is in danger she should have access to abortion
5. Making abortion illegal will not stop people from having them, it will result in death of some women who go to a free lance abortionist, it will result in infections and infertility.
6. Is making abortion illegal really a political plot to get the vote of the Christian right? or is it about health?

I personally dont believe that abortion should be illegal for the reasons above but I deplore the fact that some women use it as if it were birth control. Its a serious thing to have an abortion. It should be looked at that way in my opinion. Hope some of this helps.

I'm not surprised that you're having a hard time. It's impossible to justify the killing of innocent human beings, and every abortion kills an innocent human being. Being asked to argue for legalized abortion is like being asked to argue for legalized slavery. In both cases, human beings were labeled "non-persons" so they could be oppressed and killed without legal consequences. Don't agree? Take a look at this:

So, in answer to your questions, there are no good points. I'd sit this one out for conscience's sake.

I think abortion should be a moral and/or medical decision and the government, federal or state should have absolutely nothing to do with it.

It should be treated like any other medical procedure. I'm not saying that abortions should be performed frivolously, but it should be a decision a woman makes with her doctor. I don't want the govt to make medical, moral or ethical decisions for me. If we allow the govt to start making these decisions, where is that going to leave us in the not so distant future? Will we be forced to have cancer treatments when there is no hope for recovery? Will the govt not allow us to have DNRs?

Keep politicians out of it, Please

Make your argument based on women's health and wellbeing.

Get some hard facts first. Find out about the number of teens who suffer from incest, abuse, forced prostitution. Make it a point that this will not be used as a alternative form of birth control. Emphasize prevention, but make it clear that it would not benefit anyone to make abortions illegal. Point out that there should be laws to protect young women from unqualified doctors. Those who are desprite might seek out anyone, which is a danger to women's health.

Abortion is legal.

I agree with the poster who said that abortion is not the purview of the federal government.

From your question, it sounds like you're having a hard time finding reasons why it should NOT be legal? If that is the case, here are a few:
-- it is murder
-- all humans have a right to life
-- we all must suffer consequences for our actions
-- I repeat, it is murder. Regardless of your religious affiliation, scientists have agreed that life begins at conception.

How can someone even think of forcing a woman that's been raped to carry her rapist's child?

Sometimes abortions are necessary for the health of the mother. For example, during my mother's first pregnancy, she had a growth on her uterus that had to be removed or she would not have lived out the pregnancy. However, the pregnancy had to be terminated for doctors to reach the malignant growth.

I agree with the people who have said that abortion is the prerogative of the mother and that it is unfair on victims of rape and on sick mothers to force them to bear the child.

And what of people who were careless or drunken during the act? Will they have to forfeit their futures all for a few minutes' haste?
