My stepbrother is in jail and has been writing my family letters. Lately he has been asking about me. I haven't wrote him back bacause I don't want him to feel bad about anything, so what do I say to him. I don't want him to think that I'm avoiding him.

How is not responding to his letters not going to make him feel bad? If you don't want him to think you're avoinding him, then don't, and write back. Just tell him about your life, etc, and wish him well.

Talk to him, go see him, don't treat him like an outcast because he screwed up. Unless he has committed a crime against you or your family, be there to support him. You are avoiding him, so why lie to yourself and try to convince him any different. Find out what he is doing to prepare for when he gets out, ask him if there is anything you can do to help him while he is in jail. You are making him feel bad by avoiding him, so if you don't want to make him feel bad, be a brother and forget the step while you are at it.

Talk to him normal as if he were standing in front of you. There is nothing different from jail or another location. He apparently wants to know whats going on with you, so tell him.
I work at a prison and I know that mail is what all the inmates look forward to. They dont have physical contact to the outside world, so they write and send letters to remember their life before prison. Alot of people do soul searching while in there because they have alot of time on their hands.
It gives them the chance to keep up to date whats going on, and to be quite honest, they still feel connected to the family. Tell him the good things that are going on as well as the bad. He wants to know it all. Trust me, I know. He misses his old life, but he wont miss it all and wants to be kept up to date. So tell him everything.
He wants to hear from you and if you feel confortable, then write him back. Dont allow the fact that he is in jail stop you. He is still the same person you knew, he just has a different address now.
Good luck.

He'll think you're avoiding him if you don't write.
Look at what he's been writing about and address those topics in what you say to him because then you'll be writing about subjects that he's comfortable with.
I doubt he'll want a whole ream of your thoughts on his crime/trial/sentence-he's doing his time and that's that.
Write to him as you would if he wasn't in the jug

Just send him a card with some encouraging words in it, and later on maybe you will want to write him.

He's wondering about you. Tell him what's going on in your life. See, being in jail can be boring and they seek their family for support, etc. n
