If you live in the same state that the child was born in, then you can go to the local health unit and get a copy of it. This will be an official copy. I just got my son's last month and they printed it up right there. I also had to order mine from another state. It cost me alot more than I wanted, but I needed it. I did mine online. Just look up vital statistics of the state the birth was recorded in and go from there. Good luck!

Find the local City Hall or the Hall of Records either on line or in the phone book and make a stop there. There is usually a small fee for an official copy of the birth certificate, but it depens on the city you live in.
If you can apply on line, it's usually faster.
use a search phrase like 'xxxxx City Hall' where the xxxx'x are the city name.

You don't have to GO anywhere if you have a computer: Goto
http://www.usbirthcertificate.com
and order a birth certificate from any state. You will need some documentation from the hospital, but it's pretty easy. I had to order my son's prior to receiving it in the mail because I needed it for a passport application. Good luck.

If your expecting, at the time you have your baby, in the hospital the nurses will have you fill one out, then youu send it to Vital Records in your area. They will send you the real one. Now if your child is like 4 all you do is contact Vital recors and they will walk you through it all too. I think it costs like 20 dollars.

You have to apply to the county where your child was born. Call the county courthouse and they can direct you to the proper department. It is probably called something different in different counties.
