Why does the story of Jesus so closely parallel the story of Hercules?

Yes, Hercules WAS born of a virgin.

-born from a god (Zeus) and a mortal virgin mother (Alcmene).
-while still an infant, a jealous goddess, Hera, tried to kill him. (sounds like Herod )
-performed miraculous deeds.
-descended into Hades.
-died in agony.
-rose again as a god.

They are not exactly the same, but there are a curious number of similarities.

There aren't that many parallels. Sure, they were both the sons of gods, but Hercules wasn't god himself (whereas the legend of Jesus says that he is god). Also, was Hercules put to death? Was Hercules born of a virgin? Did Hecules come back to life afterwards and ascend to heaven?

They are pretty dissimilar.

Actually a lot of mythological stories, especially Greek have similar elements, which is logical considering they evolved orally from the same origin. Just were changed to fit the climate of their societal beliefs.

While there are similarities, they are not close. The Literalist will poke hole in this because it is not an exact match. But no spin doctor would do an exact match for fear it would be too easily discovered.
