If you are at home, certainly you can wash regular dishes with less than gallons of water.

In an institution where they must go through a large dish washer, it is another question. You must heat the water too. Schools are experimenting with recyclingof plastic trays and composting the paper trays.

Resource recovery(incinerating and using the energy could be an answer. It can be done at 2500 degrees and not cause air pollution.

Using regular dishes. Find a way to wash them that does NOT use gallons of water (it can be done!) and you can use recycled water to wash them (capture rain water!).

Paper plates not only use landfill space, they use trees, chemicals, power, etc. to be made -- again and again and again!

Regular dishes. The average amount of energy consumed to produce and maintain one dish over it's potential lifespan is considerably less than the average amount of energy used to create one paper plate.

And don't forget, you can compost paper plates. They don't have to go to a landfill

Put a rainwater tank in your yard. Use that water to wash your dishes (with eco friendly soap), then use the water from the sink to water your garden.

Good question!

Bypass all of that and eat with your fingers off the floor.
