Has your doctor ordered a CT scan of her sinuses yet? If not, you should have them do so, because what you think may be sinus problems could actually be a combination of things.

I experienced sinus problems for years, since I was a young child. My symptoms were very severe (e.g., throbbing headaches, bloody sinus infections, inability to breathe through nose, sleep apnea). All of the doctors told me that I had allergic rhinitis, and prescribed nasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, and such. HOWEVER, about 2 years ago, I switched medical plans and chose a new primary care physician, who ordered a CT scan of my sinuses. They found out that I had enlarged tonsil tissue that had grown so large that it completely blocked the back of my nasal passages, which was the reason I couldn't breathe and was sick all of the time. Once they found it, I had it surgically removed, and now my allergy symptoms are much more manageable.

I have had sinus problems all my life. I have given into the fact that I have to take Claritin (I use the generic form) and Flonase (a nasal spray) everyday or else I end up with repeated sinus infections especially during the winter. Last winter was horrible for me, but this year I decided to listen to the doctor and things have been fine. No infection yet. I just hate taking the medicines but it is better than the pain and medications I have to take to clear up the infections. Talk to your doctor about it again.

Generally, Sinusitis can be managed medically. I will frequently recommend a high fluid intake, active humidification, oral and nasal decongestants, topical nasal steroids and antibiotics. I discourage the use of over-the-counter nasal sprays (with the exception of pure saline).

When medical management does not resolve the problem, surgery to drain the infection and improve the anatomic situation that led to the obstruction may be necessary.
