Whenever Microsoft comes out with a new version of it's operating system, everyone (at times including me) have called it buggy, but this is a big step that Microsoft has taken with Vista, the Windows XP Operating system introduced a faster, more robust, secured environment, but there were some bugs, which is possible with anyone.

With Windows Vista, microsoft has added not only Eye Candy (that is, improved visual interface), but some important usability features, which include

Instant Search: Till now when you ran search in windows xp, other than the cute little doggie in the search window, all files were shown either as icons and or file name list details, and nothing more, now if what you are searching for is an image and or a video, you will see a thumbnail for the same, similarly for your word and excel files, and or internet pages, all come up as thumbnails, so you can actually look at the content of the file as well.

Windows Sidebar: this is the equivalent of all those widgets you were downloading from the internet for your windows xp, to show you the world clock, the calendar or maybe the weather, now all of it is built in, so no more crashing the pc, because you downloaded a virus infected file from the internet, just because it was free.

Microsoft Phishing Filter: Phishing is becoming a big headache for all banks, though the firefox 2.0 has the phishing filter built in, but MS adds this in Vista to the internet explorer

Higher responsiveness: To improve file open and read speeds, on tasks that you do regularly, Microsoft introduced prefetch technology in Windows XP, this is now called Superfetch in Windows vista, which will not only allow you to launch applications faster but also allowing a faster launch time right after you switched on the PC.

Tagging of files: Microsoft's biggest blunder of following the 8.3 file name till Windows 98, was removed in Windows XP, but it still missed on adding more information, and tagging files, by name of project etc. File management today is becoming an increasing problem, as all of us have so much information and so much digital content on our PC. The File name tags, can now help you put multiple tags, like you could tag some files work, some home, kids, and there by at any one time just hunt for files that are related to kids, or for home or for work (I am not sure if Vista allows for multiple tags)

Higher Security: Though very much of importance to a business user, and not so much to a home PC user, this is a great add on to Windows vista.

As far as the speed is concerned, on the hardware that is designed for windows Vista, and meets the minimum expectations of Vista, Vista will run faster than Windows XP, i.e it is faster, but if you try to run it on your PC that is already short on resources, you will find it to be very slow.

the speed is depending on your pc, not vista. vista is just an operating system.

it is an upgrade of windows xp, they borrowed a lot of ideas from mac osx and put it into a windows platform. it is very buggy still and already working on a service pack. you can get away with it for another year and a half.

dze has it right. I've read reviews and there is no speed advantage except in remote situations, and you need to upgrade all your drivers and video card.

I've decided not to buy Vista until I'm ready for a new computer, after it's got the bugs out and I have to.

in my understanding its mainly beneficial coz it has more eye-candy and looks beter ... plus they will write software that will only function correctly with vista to try to force people to "upgrade" ... already directx10 videocards and software is slated to only work on vista ... imo vista is an attempt to force another purchase out of u by microsoft without offering any real benefits to computing ...
