That way they can pay their employees more.

I tip more for better service.
I can be more generous to waitstaff that takes better care of me, and a little less so with those that are less than adequate.

Of course, there are people who are not sensitive to the pay scheme of waiters and waitresses, and they leave crappy tips just because they are clueless. Trust me on that!

Anyway, great servers make great tips most of the time, and crappy servers (admit it, some servers are crappy!) get crappy tips, and they get into a different line of work.

McDonalds pays everybody minimum wage, and some of those kids are better workers than others. At least servers get more money for better service when customers pay them directly for it.

Wouldn't you rather have the option of tipping someone well for good service and poorly for bad service? I know I would. That is the incentive servers have to be nice and take care of your needs. I would HATE knowing that a crappy server automatically gets the same wages as a great server.

I tip based on how friendly and helpful the service is. You get a snotty waiter/waitress and it can ruin a great meal. So I agree with one of the other answers, there would be no incentive to go the "extra mile"!

Well, you don't HAVE to pay tips at all. It's just completely rude to expect someone to wait on you and your family hand and foot, then stick them by not leaving a tip. If you are that opposed to giving tips, don't eat out.

Then what is the employee's motivation to provide good service?

If we don't pay tips, the servers would probably not be as friendly because they would have nothing extra to shoot for.

Yeah, that's what I say - and while we're at it, lets round out all that change to the whole dollar.
Such as: $22.04 = $22.00 - $22.89 = $23.00
