I would like to take the standard deduction of $30 for the federal excise tax. I was wondering if this pertains to wireless phone services as well. I've had sprint cell phone service since May 2005. I have a family shared plan with 2000 anytime minutes and free long distance. In viewing the online invoices, I noticed that they do not break down the tax charges so i'm not 100% sure. Thanks in advance.

You can't claim it unless you paid taxes on your cell phone's long distance service. Check one of your paper invoices. Most likely it will the be the same for each month. If you have a land phone line in your name you can also claim the long distance service taxes on it as well.

There is a telephone tax rebate credit available as a standard deduction for anyone who had long distance telephone service from 2003 onward. the credit is $50 unless you have bills that can prove it is higher. This is something new for 2006. This covers the telephone excise tax paid on long distance service between march 2003 and July 2006.

The IRS website says that wireless phones are included. If you only had local service, no - this tax was on long distance. But it says that if you had long distance or bundled (one price for everything) service you can take it. See source below for IRS q and a. The phone had to be in your name.

Unless you use your cell phone for business you cannot claim that. Only your home phone if it is in your name.
