On the last cruise we took on Carnival in June '06, the tips were added to our on-board account the moment we stepped onto the ship.

The folks in our group that opened cash accounts could not charge until they deposited more money into their accounts because the tips were already charged to the account.

Royal Caribbean allows you to charge your tips to your on-board account but you cannot "adjust" the amount for good/bad service. If you tip cash, RC still uses the old envelope system, so put the cash away (in the in-room safe) so you will have it at the end of the trip.

Tips are usually $10/per day/per guest. The tips are divided between your cabin steward, waiter and assistant waiter.

Check out your cruise provider's web page for details.

Also, be sure to have cash in small bills to tip porters at the cruise terminal as well as pay for taxis in port.

You do NOT have to tip at the beginning of the cruise. We base gratuity aboard ship as with any other service. More if the service is above your expectations, less if not.
The following is an idea, some ships have different scales:
cabin attendant $3.50 per person per day
waiter:$3.00per day
water person: $1.50 pd
Sometimes the wine steward & maitre 'd are tipped. There will be a schedule of rates in your room and envelopes in your room on the last night at sea.

I took a cruise a couple years ago, and the gratuity was done right at the end of the cruise.

put it this way, a gratuity is supposed to be a payment for excellent service. how do you know if you got excellent service until aftwards?
