He wasn't looking anywhere, because there was nowhere to look. Space and time are components of the universe. Matter, energy, space and time were all created simultaneously. Before that there was NOTHING. Not a space filled with nothing, but NOTHING at all, including space.

The spacetime metrics are meaningless outside of the universe.
However, if you look up the inflaton, you'll find an eternal universe of which our visible universe is only a finite piece.
