I am suffering with a stomach virus. Tons of gas, diarrhea, no vomiting. For 5 days now. As I am 2 yrs post-gastric bypass, I thought this was a by-product. I know others who have had that surgery who have had this happen.

But I am thinking it might not be related at all. And because I am at a new job, my health insurance will not go into effect for 13 more days. So no doctor’s visit is possible.

Does anyone know if stool that is dark green is a problem? Or, indicative of a larger issue? I am TERRIFIED about that. That began last night. Everyone I have spoken to has made me clarify if it is “black” or dark green. Clearly, black is a huge issue. It is not black at all, but dark green. And no, I have not eaten any vegetables in the last 72 hours.

If this is just a stomach virus, I can deal with it. If it is something bigger, I am too frightened to say what I will do. Have stuck to toast, chicken broth, Gatorade and cranberry juice for the last 2 days. Will do so today, too.

You should go to a doctor anyway. Find out if you have a free clinic nearby or at least someone who'll bill you and let you make small payments later. Diarrhea that lasts that long is serious; you can get dehydrated and you lose a lot of electrolytes - often more than you can effectively replace with Gatorade.

I don't know whether the color is terribly indicative of anything, but this extended course of diarrhea should be evaluated right away.

Usually a green stool is indicitive of a gastric infection. I spent nine days in the hospital with salmonella and the first clue to my diagnosis was the green diarrhea.

They're right to get you to distinguish between black and green, cos, if its black, it means bad.

However, if you're sure its green, it sounds normal to me. Recent diarrhoea + green faeces = stomach bug. Just means your stool is moving so fast through your tract that the bile is not being absorbed. Keep an eye on it though, if it doesn't clear up in the next couple of days, get to the docs.

usually when you have a problem with your stomach your stool will be white. I think lots of people who have stomach viruses drink pepto bismal and that will turn your stool (and tongue) black. I the hospital they put people with stomach problems on the BRATT diet. Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast, and Tea.

No it is completely normal, I would not worry. If it lasts longer see your doctor. 7-up and crackers help too!
