Ige are whats responsible for allergies and can be measured by a blood test for total ige or specific levels of ige in response to a particular allergen.

They help the body deal with infestations like parasites.Thus in past times that had a survival advantage, since everyone had parasites. If you were good at producing eosinophils, the cells that are associated with this response it was useful in getting your parasite population down.
They tend to rise in allergy, often this is more of a problem in the developed world where we have dealt with our parasites. The allergic response is overblown and can cause more trouble than it is worth!
