There may be something that reminds her of a negative event. Put her in sit, click the leash on her and bring her into the house. Don't pet her if she's nervous - you'll be encouraging her behavior. Stay by the door and her in sit or down and make sure to stay right next to her.

After a few minutes bring her further into the house. Have food in a bowl so she'll understand that being inside there is food and water. Have her in sit and in down.

Bring her further into the house after a few minutes. Don't treat or pet her if she's showing nervous signs. Just keep her in sit or down till she calms down, and stay close to her.

This will take time and patience but all you can do is bring her in slowly and don't encourage her anxious behavior.

Good Luck

start by sitting in the doorway with a treat. get he(?) as close to the door as possible and give lots of praise. Every few days, or as the dog becomes more comfortable with coming near the open door, move alittle more inside the house every few days,or at the beginning of each new week, with treats and maybe a favorite doggie toy. when you do this sit with the dog for as long as possible petting and talking to it. maybe introduce the dog to various things around the house so it gets used to the smell. this may take along time, but depending on how the dog was treated by the previous owners or what it experianced it could be deeply traumatized and just needs some time and understanding. IF you have small kids you may want to do this early in the am or during nap times so its not too loud and over stimulating and the dog doesnt get scared. eventually puppy will adjust. just be patient with it.

Take her for a long walk, let her get use to you. You can even try jogging w/ her. You really want to get her tired. By doing this you accomplish two things 1) her trust in you 2) exhaust her. When she is good and tired have someone hold the door open for you and walk her in (you first). She won't put up a fight because you did all the hard work. Good luck and good job adopting instead of buying.

I see allot of people are saying you need to be gentle w/ her and coerce her in w/ treats. MY OPINION is if you try this method your not gaining your dogs trust. She will be able to sense something is up. You don't want to start your relationship on the wrong foot and tricking her in to the house this way will be doing just that. By walking her and getting her tired you will gain her trust. If it doesn't work the first time walk her around the block again and again, till she is ready to come in on her own.

We rescued a dog once that was terrified to go thru any door, in or out. It took some time, but with the lure of a tastey treat, I was able to coax him in and out several times. Eventually, he realized the doors were nothing to worry about and related them to a positive experience when he got a treat.

Be patient and work on coaxing the dog, showing that this is a positive experience, and I'm sure in time this will change.

It could be that she was traumatized by a previous owner. Best bet is to follow the advise above-slowly, gradually introduce her to the house.

Good luck to you both, and thank you for adopting an older dog!

you will have to be very patient with her. it sounds like she was abused before you got her if she is that scared. i breed them and if they are treated right they will be the best dog for all families. the only thing that you can do is just go very slow with her and she will come around and see that you are not going to abuse her or mistreat her in any way. it also sounds like she was just left outside and never let in the house and if she did come in she probably got abused for that and she is thinking that she may get beat for coming in. i know some people that will allow their dogs to come in and then beat them for coming in after the owner let them in, and they feel that this is a way of training a dog not to come in the home, but in fact it is abuse and mistreatment to the dog. that is how you can scare a dog from doing anything that you want them to do. all you can is just be very patient with her and you will see that she will come around soon she is still young to learn that she is in a place that she can feel safe and comfortable around people again. also have your family come over to help with the process and she will come around a bit faster with the help of family members. good luck

I know its cold and I have one now that is getting better but she is young and just wants the others to come out and play.

Give a treat once she is in thehouse. Lure her if necessary I have had to sit on the back porch and wait for them to come too me. Patience and treats when she is in the house and only when she comes in till she gets that down.
