from a garden designers point of view the benefits are that

you should have a garden which will look nice all year round. So for example you have plants which do well in summer and other which do ok in winter.

Having a diverse garden might also make your garden more attractive to wildlife such as birds or insects where each species might only be interested in one type of flower/plant.

and finally it should be more interesting to look at.
